Yes, the look of the movie is superb. But the story's half-baked. I love Johnny Depp, but the humor falls flat with everything delivered in monotone. The ending was pretty exciting, but so seriously delivered when everything leading to it was not very serious, sort of made it off-kilter--out of place with the rest. Burton knew what his mood would be, but I'm not sure he knew what tone he wanted to strike. It's all over the place.

Your review confirms my suspicions after seeing just the trailer. The Gothic-y stuff looks wonderful, the '70s "comedy" not so much.

Okay, I understand, even though the Times says it's good, it's not so good! I still want to see it. Terrific writing in this review.
