Witches’ Tales Vol. 4 Issue 3

A puppet carved from gallows wood, a dancer who twirls in the wrong direction, Medusa’s head holds up like granite, and a witch goes for a joy ride on her  broom. And two stories and the undying fiend provide a bit more terror for you in this issue of Witches’ Tales.

Witches Tales Vol.1, Issue 9
December 1969

How could any self-respecting monsterkid pass up on such a cover? Of course, once snatched from the magazine rack, one would need to be vary careful around one’s mom and employ subterfuge and guile to keep such a magazine carefully hidden. Just saying. I learned my lesson with Vampirella No. 1. My mom outsmarted me THAT time. She threatened to dial up Warren Publications and organize all manner of mayhem against them. No telling what she would have done if she saw this issue of Witches Tales. Speaking of witch (hey, a pun!), this issue is gruesomely drawn and vile in its depictions of victims and sinners. Perfect!

Weird Worlds Vol.2 Issue 1
February 1971

Not the best stories of the bunch in this issue, but the artwork is always wonderful. After you read a lot of these magazines you realize that women were either married, looking to get married, or not pretty enough to be married. The men were either heroic, scientists or fools; or married, looking to get married, or not handsome enough to be married. The best stories hinge on revenge, murder or monsters, and dead things looking for revenge or murder. Often enough the married men and women were hellbent on revenge or murder. Oh, and yes, ghosts, ghouls, witches, zombies, vampires, and other assorted nasties churned up the mix too, and were always more interesting than the men or women.

What says Halloween better than a cup of hot chocolate, sipped while reading a monster magazine as the autumn winds scuttle dead leaves throughout the gray day. Here are some Tales of Voodoo for you, printed in spendid black and white with heavy on the black; zombies, demons, and vampires, oh my!

The Monster Times Issue 33, 1974

Issue 33 of The Monster Times really does go ape. The Planet of the Apes movie franchise gets most of the bananas–I mean coverage–in this issue, but other apes in movies aren't left with just the peel. I had hit a local theater with a bag of McDonald's, back in Brooklyn, circa 1970s, to catch a Planet of the Apes marathon. Ah, memories. I'd do it again faster than someone hitting the floor after slipping on a banana peel.

Monster World Issue 7, 1965

Here’s a monster matinee issue of Monster World for your Saturday morning coffee reading pleasure. Issue 7 has lots of those wonderful advertising pages we loved as kids (but now I realize how much page-space was taken up for them!), and a Son of Frankenstein filmbook,  a note about Basil Rathbone’s dislike for being known as a horror actor, and Ghidorah! wags his tail. There ‘s a wonderful two-page spread on Famous Monster’s 3rd Fantastic Amateur Make-up Contest! too. A rather smart way to sell the 4.95 dollar kit. Of course, that kit, unused, would fetch a lot more money today. Then again, I wonder how many millennials are into monsterkid stuff?

The Monster Times Issue 36
October 1974

Here’s another jam-packed issue for The Monster Times, issue 36. I get goosebumps when I read news blurbs like the one you’ll find on page 25, in Trek Talk. A bloody sweet tw0-pager by Dez Skinn and Dave Gibbons provides the comic relief, and Jason Thomas brings us part 1 of Robots in the Cinema. The mysterious Howard Philips asks Why Super-Heroines Leave Home, and the monster movies are gravely covered with Tales From Beyond the Grave and, one of my favorite Donald Pleasence movies, The Mutations. Lots more to read, so I won’t keep you any longer: jump right in!

The Monster Times Issue 35, 1974

Here’s a monster timely issue for Godzilla fans. Issue 35 of The Monster Times covers Tokyo’s eternal monster problem with a nifty rundown on the big nasties across the movies (up until 1974, of course). Howard Phillips (um, yeah) provides an overview of Supernatural Horrors in the comics, and the Science Fiction Book Club (gee, I was a member!) gets a shout-out in Bargains From Beyond. Not surprisingly, there’s a full-page ad for the Science Fiction Book Club, too. Back then, the club was the best way to get your hands on copious genre reading material. John Tibbets provides an academic lecture on horror and Chosen Survivors gets a “worth seeing” review. Also noteworthy, Trek Talk provides Cleveland Amory’s review of Star Trek, which originally appeared in TV Guide‘s 1967 issue.

The Monster Times Issue 34, 1974

The Time Machine kicks off issue 34 of The Monster Times, with It Came From Out of the Underground (comix, that is), and Star Trek Lives! By 1979, Star Trek fandom would get their fix with Star Trek the Motion Picture (well, okay, sort of), and more ST to follow on the big screen. William Shatner also gives TMT a lengthy interview, too. Doug Murray pours over the slimy monsters to be found in comics, and a pondering over Zardoz ponders some more. Ladies of Fright explores female terrors in film beginning with Freaks, but of course needs to be added to by now, and a preview of Madhouse with Vincent Price is tossed in for good measure. Of special nostalgic and historical interest, you’ll find on page 27, a half-page rundown on all the cool happenings planned for the 1974 New York Comic Art Convention, where fans mingled with the greats. Sadly, I didn’t take pictures when I attended–I know, how stupid of me! But I was there, although my memories are more foggy than clear about the whole thing, but I swear, I wasn’t doing drugs. I wasn’t!
