Matthew Bradley

This DVD is particularly welcome if you know for how long DEAD OF NIGHT was extremely hard to come by. It was rarely rebroadcast and, in the old VHS days, originally released only in the "Thriller Video" series introduced---and mocked---by Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. That was a little rough for those of us who take our Matheson seriously! The film is, as you point out, inevitably a mixed bag, but "Bobby" certainly remains effective; Curtis and Matheson were, to some extent, trying to recapture the feel of the Zuni doll segment from TRILOGY OF TERROR. And, of course, Matheson considered Finney the master of the time-travel romance, even naming a character after him in SOMEWHERE IN TIME. For further information, see my book RICHARD MATHESON ON SCREEN, tentatively scheduled for an early October publication.
