Vampiress Barbara Hambly Bites Back!

If you're a fan of horror media then you've probably heard the name Barbara Hambly. Her vampire novels - "Those Who Hunt the Night" and "Traveling With the Dead" - were instant classics in the genre upon their release in the late eighties. Featuring the enigmatic Don Simon Ysidro, these two books plunged readers deep into a hidden London underworld, a turn-of the-century milieu of covert espionage, and vampirism. Formerly out of print, Open Road Media will be re-introducing these books (plus several other Hambly classics) to a new generation. Both books will be coming to your favorite eReader device this month.

Dreadful Hallowgreen to Haunt Wonderfest!

The Dreadful Hallowgreen Special will be making a special big screen appearance at this years Wonderfest during the Saturday Night Chiller Cinema Live Event hosted by Dr. Gangrene.

Fiendish Hoffine Strikes Again!

I just posted a recent project I photographed for Famous Monsters of Filmland Magazine called PICKMAN'S MASTERPIECE.

This sequence of images will accompany the publication of an H.P. Lovecraft story called PICKMAN'S MODEL in their upcoming issue.  In Lovecraft's story, Pickman is a brilliant but marginalized artist notorious for his horrifying artwork.

"The Bowman Body first appeared on television in the summer of 1970. Shock Theater on WXEX was a replacement show and was never supposed to go past 12 weeks on the air. All the episodes were shot in a short period of time and in the last segment of the last show, Bill decided to ask viewers to write the station if they liked what they saw...and apparently, they sure did. The station was flooded with mail and it was  very popular with college students who had returned in time to catch it. One single letter from a fraternity at William and Mary had over 400 signatures alone.

"A new documentary celebrating the career and impact of Richmond area broadcaster, Bill Bowman and his television horror movie host persona, The Bowman Body, is nearing completion. The producers are seeking final funds for Hi There, Horror Movie Fans and expect to finish the film during the spring of 2011."

"Announced today, the Tribeca Film Institute and the Ford Foundation’s JustFilms have partnered to launch The Tribeca Film Institute New Media Fund. The initiative will provide support to filmmakers who combine traditional filmmaking with newer media platforms including video games, mobile apps, social networks and micro-blogging. This is an industry first.

"In a move that acknowledges the value of audience engagement, the $750,000 fund will provide support and funding to film projects which go beyond traditional screens – integrating film with content across newer media platforms, from video games and mobile apps to social networks and micro-blogging. All projects will activate audiences around issues of contemporary social justice and equality.

"Submissions will be open from April 4 through May 25, 2011. TFI will require select grantees to document their process, and help build an open on-line resource for media producers with the goal of establishing best practices in this new ‘transmedia’ field. The TFI New Media Fund is currently soliciting online feedback from a variety of disciplines and industries on the proposed submissions guidelines for the fund in order to foster an open dialog about what is possible in this new field."

Horror Writers Association Now Open to Horror Bloggers

Author Vince Liaguno of Slasher Speak sends this exciting news for horror bloggers.

As a current Board member (second-term Secretary) of the Horror Writers Association, I'm thrilled to announce that the organization--- the only major professional writing org dedicated to the horror field --- is now accepting non-professional members in the newly created "Supporting Membership" level.

Although the HWA is largely dedicated to servicing professional writers in the genre, it also recognizes that, as the only non-profit organization devoted to advancing and promoting horror, it exists to serve all those who have an interest in the genre.

The new Supporting Membership will offer bloggers, readers, fans, and writers who are still working towards that first professional sale the opportunity to interact with some of their favorite writers, the ability to recommend works for the organization's prestigious Bram Stoker Award, and discounted prices on the organization's annual Bram Stoker Award Weekend (to be held June 16-19, 2011 on Long Island, with guests including Peter Straub, David Morrell, Douglas Clegg, and many more).

Newsy Nosey: Flying Zombie Death Monkeys and More

I get a lot of strange requests. Taking a cue from Hunter S. Thompson, I'd say Fear and Loathing in Blogging could be an interesting book many of us bloggers would be able to write. One of these days.

In the meantime, I get a lot of strange requests to read this or that, or announce that and this. Times I wish I could read and view and experience most everything that comes my why, and other times I simply wish everything would go by my way. Way by.

But that's me.

I'm a critical kind of guy. And a fan to boot. It's not easy walking both. Just look at Ain't It Cool News and you'll see what I mean. It used to be a witty, engaging, and coherently written news source. But its geeky-cheeky, fan boy, gee-whiz cool pluralism, has been overtaken by a self-righteous, comic-house preachiness, written in monosyllabic sentences, punctuated by potty words your mommy plopped that bar of Palmolive into your mouth for saying. As you get older, those dare swears lose their big boy edginess and wear thin.

But I digress. Must be the weather.

I haven't read Chris Wood's Sherlock Holmes and the Flying Zombie Death Monkeys, nor have I paged through his Sherlock Holmes and the Underpants of Death. I consider myself a bit of a Sherlockian scholar and purist. I'm not a fan of pastiches, parodies, and sundry variations on an Edwardian theme; or Victorian, for that matter. But these titles are funny. Maybe Chris' writing is, too. Either way, anyone from Manchester can't be all bad.

I've not watched Long Pigs yet, but co-director Nathan Hynes is off on another project: A Cooling of the Blood. The press release info says " written and to-be directed by Nathan Hynes is a short format psychological thriller. The story deals with the consequences of a man who has murdered his wife in a tragic crime of passion." Short format works well for Festival gigs, I hear. What struck me odd about the press release was that it was sent in .pdf for a thing only a half-page worth. Must have been a short format press release, too.

After Dark Films announced the Prowl trailer is available. It's plastered all over, but YouTube's an easy find to view it. ADF's movies have been a mixed bag, but I try to stay open-minded. I get suspicious when a movie that's not been mainstreamed yet gets a 7+ on IMDb. That's fishy.

Sam Johnson shot over word his Cabra Cini: Voodoo Junkie Hitwoman has just made her color debut in Visionary Comics' Digital Visions #4. You can read it online. Gotta love that title.

Zombie Farm, the first horror film available in Spanish and English, plows the DVD shelves March 8th. I'm not sure what they mean by being the first, unless the actors did double takes to accomodate each language. Go to YouTube for the trailer. I don't know why, but the image of a zombie milking a cow just popped into my head.

When warned that her husband (Khotan) may “change” if given a special potion, the abused wife is relieved. But waking up in bed next to a zombie isn’t exactly the transformation she was hoping for.Her once violent husband becomes the leader of a zombie uprising, terrorizing, and then converting the townsfolk into un-dead assassins. Clearly, some things are far worse than death.

The Fall, the second volume in Guillermo del Toro’s and Chuck Hogan’s The Strain Trilogy, was released last week. Here's del Toro talking about the first book, The Strain. He also talks about vampires in this YouTube. Oh, and his favorite ghost movies, too, over here.

The 1st Annual Oklahoma Horror Film Festival is accepting entries of screenplays, films, and more. More information and submission form are available at: http://www.oklahomahorrorfilmfest.com/submissions.

The festival will be held Labor Day Weekend (Sept 3-5) at the SpiritBank Event Center in Tulsa, OK. Lodging and restaurants are within walking distance of this location. The festival is competitive, with approximately 50-60 films screened and will host a variety of workshops and panels covering various aspects of the film industry and horror genre. Regular Deadline is June 5th, 2010. Final Submission Deadline is July 3rd, 2010. All entries must fall into at least one of the following categories: Horror, Supernatural, Monster, Sci-Fi, Crime, Thriller, Suspense, Cult, or Mental Illness.

I'm giddy with excitement! Columbia Pictures is reviving Doc Savage! The pulp hero superman who, with his band of world travelers, fights evil-doers across the globe. After fans were left breathless--from embarrassment--from George Pal's ill-conceived production in 1975, Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze, let's hope this time Doc and his amazing five are given the A treatment.

"Studio is bringing Doc Savage -- known as the Man of Bronze and hero of pulp novels, films and comicbooks -- back to the bigscreen. Shane Black is attached to direct the film from a screenplay he is penning with Anthony Bagarozzi and Chuck Mondry. Neal Moritz ("Fast and Furious") will produce through his Sony-based Original Film banner." Read more at Variety.

Bryan at Cinema Suicide asks..."Want to learn how to destroy evil robots with jumper cables or how to troubleshoot broken household appliances with ESP?" New web series ‘How to Survive the Strange’ aims to be PBS’s This Old House meets a zombie apocalypse survival guide. An open casting call for the show will be held March 15th at 6pm at Crackskulls Coffee and Books in Newmarket, NH.

"How to Survive the Strange is a tongue in cheek how-to series created by web producer John Herman and Bryan White, author of B-movie blog Cinema Suicide. According to the creators, the show aims to prepare the public for everything from alien invasion to campground slashers –often using common objects around the house. Herman and White are looking to cast zombies, ghosts, evil robots, and even a crazed mob. And there are non-strange roles to cast too. "Interested non-union actors are encouraged to bring a headshot and talent resume, though neither is required to audition. Actors will be seen on a first come, first served basis. How to Survive the Strange debuts May 3rd on the web.

Anton Strout's Dead Matter, where he puts Simon Canderous into more hot water in this third urban fantasy novel in the series, is now on sale. Catch Strout and Amber Benson (of Buffy The Vampire Slayer fame) Saturday, February 27th, from 3:00 to 5:00PM, signing at Midtown Comics, 200 W. 40th Street, on the corner of 7th avenue, in New York City. (Amber will be signing her 2nd Cat's Claw Calliope-Reaper Jones novel.)

Midnight Syndicate to debut first music video at Transworld's Haunted House Show in St. Louis,  March 25-28th. Midnight Syndicate is teaming up with Precinct 13 Entertainment, Robert Kurtzman's Creature Corps, and director David Greathouse to produce a music video for Dark Legacy from their Dead Matter: Cemetery Gates CD. It is the band's first music video in their 13-year career. Syndicate's Edward Douglas, director Greathouse, and Robert Kurtzman will be on hand to premiere the video during The Dubliner Opening Night Celebration co-sponsored by Ken Donat and Westland Insurance at the TransWorld 15th Halloween & Attractions Show in St. Louis March 25th(www.haashow.com). Chad over at Crackle recently shot me an email and pointed me to their Zombiefest (which ran last October), as well as Crackle's online videos. I did a search on horror and came up with a few nifty movies, like The Creeping Flesh. I added it to my playlist, and while I'm exploring the site, I thought you might find it interesting to do so, too. Let me know what you think...

Drugs, nudity, gore, psychotronic violence...we went for it! :-) All for a very, very low budget. The short is creepy as hell (good use of black and white), and dialog is overshadowed by the brooding visuals...
